Albanian president, Ilir Meta on Wednesday attended the Transatlantic Leadership Network forum hosted by the US Congress in Washington. The forum’s topic was: “Western Balkans: How to overcome obstacles in the path toward the European Union”. In his address, Meta said that “the only border change for which we should work day and night is the expansion of the European border in Western Balkans!”
Meta also added that he hopes that “more European investors will invest in strategic sectors of our economies”, assuring them that they will have full support, “while helping us to stop people from leaving from our countries”.
In his address, Mr. Meta also said that the European border has further expanded with new members who have joined the European Union. Montenegro and Serbia are advancing with their accession talks, followed by Albania and Republic of North Macedonia, who are ready to open accession talks. Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina are on the right path, although their progress is slow.
According to Meta, EU integration is a process of peace and democracy.
Meta also stressed that Montenegro’s accession in the NATO and the latest Prespes agreement signed between Republic of North Macedonia and Greece, has produced new optimism in the region.
Meta noted that “the only border change should be the expansion of the European border in Western Balkans!”
“With this in mind, Albania’s and North Macedonia’s aspirations to open accession talks and to catch up those countries who have advanced, are as intensive as before”.
EU and investments
The head of the state also stopped on the pessimistic situation that the EU finds itself in: “We realize the difficulties that the European Union is going through. However, we show our solidarity with our partners and we’re against any game which could threaten our European future.”
Meanwhile, he also stopped on the investments that Albania and the Balkans in general need: “Ihope that more European investors will invest in strategic sectors of our economies”. “They will have our full support and they will be helping us to stop people from leaving our countries”.
The history of the European Union, he continued, has shown that the West has successfully survived all obstacles and challenges that emerged at the end of the Cold War. European expansion has occurred regardless of the doubts or hesitations which have always been present”.
