There’s a growing number of illegal refugees who have crossed the border into Albania. This was confirmed by the Helsinki Committee, after monitoring all border crossing points in the south of Albania. “The first six months of 2018 have registered an increase in the number of illegal refugees crossing the border into the country”, the report in question states, adding that on the other hand, “the Albanian state does not have the necessary capacities to patrol the green border”. Meanwhile, Eria Skendaj, director of the Albanian Helsinki Committee says that Albanian crossing border points have not provided accurate information on the number of illegal refugees who have crossed into Albania from Greece.
According to her, there have been cases where the Albanian authorities have violated the rights of refugees or other people who cross the border. Meanwhile, preliminary conclusions drawn by the Albanian Helsinki Committee state that infrastructure capacities in border crossing points are limited. The report also points out a lack of personnel in terms of translators, psychiatrists or doctors. “There may be patients suffering from infective diseases or patients who need immediate medical care due to the fact that they come from war zones”, the representative of the Albanian Helsinki Committee says about this. “Where will these people be accommodated? Asylum seekers’ facilities have a limited capacity. There are shortages in personnel and it’s impossible to carry out a more efficient check in the entire area of the green border”, she added.
