Adem Demaçi dies aged 82, Albanian politicians: He was Kosovo’s Mandela

Prominent activist from Kosovo, Adem Demaçi has passed away aged 82. The sad news was confirmed by the deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Kosovo, Xhavit Haliti during yesterday’s plenary session. “Our teacher, the man who spent 28 years in Serb prisons, has passed away. He died, but his activity will be remembered eternally”, Haliti said. Meanwhile, MPs who were present in the plenary session observed one minute silence to honor Demaçi’s activity.

The prominent figure suffered a long prison sentence in former Yugoslavia for defending the Albanian national cause. Let us recall that 60 years ago, Adem Demaçi was arrested in Pristina on political charges. Before the trial, he publicly demanded Kosovo’s unification with Albania. For such declarations, he was given 28 years in prison and was freed following the democratic developments in former Yugoslavia. Adem Demaçi was a journalist and writer, politician and activist of human rights. Meanwhile, his death prompted many reactions by Albanian politicians. On his part, president of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci said that “It’s very hard to accept that our symbol of resistance, Adem Demaçi has passed away. He was strong and invincible in front of every challenge that he encountered. Adem Demaçi dedicated his life to Kosovo and we will always remember him as the voice of the national awareness”, he commented. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Ramush Haradinaj has considered Demaçi as a man who spent his life in the service of his country. On his part, the chairman of the Democratic Party of Albania, Lulzim Basha considered Adem Demaçi as Kosovo’s Mandela. The president of Albania, Ilir Meta said that Demaçi was a patriot who inspires all generations.
