Industry of milk is growing, quantity collected by farmers increases
Industry of milk in Albania is growing, offering consumers processed dairy products, encouraging them to give up products which are directly offered by farmers in the informal milk market. This is confirmed by the country’s office for statistics, INSTAT, according to which, last year there was a growth in the quantity of milk collected by processing plants. “In 2017, the quantity of collected milk was around 131 thousand tons, registering an increase of 3.99% compared to the previous year”, experts of INSTAT say. Meanwhile, in 2016 this quantity was 125 thousand. The European Institute for Statistics (Eurostat) said that this quantity was relatively small compared to European standards.

But, it looks like things are changing in Albania too. Processing plants are collecting more milk and consumers are gradually leaving ambulant vendors, although their numbers continue to be high. Meanwhile, the minister of Agriculture, Niko Peleshi has sent out a special message on this a while ago. According to him, consumers should only consume dairy products offered by processing plants, because their products meet food safety standards. On the other hand, experts of statistics say that last year, the amount of cow milk that was collected amounted to 110 thousand tons, registering an increase of 6,55% compared to the previous year, 2016. The quantity of sheep milk was around 13 thousand tons, 1,54% more than a year ago. Meanwhile, the amount of goat milk saw a decline of 8,04% compared to 2016. The quantity of goat milk that was collected was 9 thousand.
