FORUM/ The debate on the decision to build a new National Theater continues. Artists continue to offer their opinions. Albanian Free Press has talked to Kujtim Gjonaj, Ferdinand Hysi, Perparim Hysi, Bashkim Kozeli, Nikolin Gurakuiq, Çlirim Hoxha
While announcing that they would even enter a hunger strike if needed to prevent the demolition of the National Theater building, artists continue to be divided on this issue. Today, Albanian Free Press offers insights by several artists who are in favour and against the decision to demolish the building. Some of them say that the building should be preserved, in order to serve as a museum for the past heritage of this institution of Albanian culture. Others believe that progress is needed and that a new National Theater is part of this progress. But everyone believes that the issue is being highly politicized. “The new theater should be built somewhere else. The problem is that the fact that it’s being politicized so much, is damaging this issue. Everything is politicized in Albania”, says film director Nikolin Gurakuqi. Meanwhile, writer Perparim Hysi says that “actors are politically influenced, because nobody is depriving them of exerting their profession”. On the other hand, playwright, Ferdinand Hysi says that “the theater has a historical value and this is the reason why it should be preserved. Perhaps, all sides will agree if they look at it from this perspective.” “However, if we talk about values, I think that the theater should be preserved”, says film director and screenwriter, Kujtim Gjonaj.
