While the much debated case against the former Interior minister is finally being handled by the justice system, we see a new case emerging within political circles: the case regarding the current Interior minister, Fatmir Xhafaj. It’s been days that the opposition has been accusing him of having an incriminated brother, asking him to resign from the position that he currently holds. Meanwhile, yesterday, the Democratic Party delivered a special press conference where it published new facts regarding the case of Agron Xhafaj, claiming that the Interior minister’s brother continues to organize drug traffic in Vlora. The Democratic Party published registered conversations, claiming that Agron Xhafaj talks on the phone with an incriminated person about the traffic of drugs. Today, Albanian Free Press obtains insights from four MPs, Ervin Salianji, Klevis Balliu, Andrea Marto and Antoneta Dhima. How do they comment this recent development? Why is the Interior minister being attacked by the opposition? Who has to gain from this? According to Ervin Salianji (DP), “Xhafaj family represents the biggest drug lords!”
“Fatmir Xhafaj offers his brother protection from the State Police. This is the reality of Edi Rama’s government, where his Interior ministers support and facilitate drug traffic”, he said. Meanwhile, the other democrat MP, Klevis Balliu says that “in five years, Rama could not find a minister within the Socialist Party, who was not involved in the traffic of drugs”, he said. On the other hand, for socialist MPs, the opposition is only looking to come up with new accusations. “It’s been a while that the opposition is looking to find new elements in order to build an opposition action plan. It offers no other alternative and it tries to exploit anything that it finds”, the socialist MP, Andrea Marto says. Meanwhile, for Antoneta Dhima, “the attack against Mr. Xhafaj is made to delegitimize the reform in justice and the activity of the Albanian parliament”.
