Attorney General removes Tahiri’s prosecutor, opposition launches accusations
The Serious Crimes Prosecutor, Besim Hajdarmataj has been removed and replaced by the assistant district attorney of Durres, Donika Prelaj.  The decision has been signed by Attorney General, Arta Marku. According to Marku’s decision, “this change will lead to quicker and more effective prosecution of cases which have a higher priority”.  Let us recall that the removed prosecutor was in charge of the investigation of former minister Sajmir Tahiri, who requested his arrest. Meanwhile, asked on this issue, the prosecutor said that the arguments that were provided by the Attorney General were not clear.

“The only case in which I’m directly involved is the one regarding former minister of Interior, Sajmir Tahiri. Now I’m a simple prosecutor and I will continue to work on my other cases until a new order for my transfer to another institution is issued”, he added. On the other hand, politicians have reacted about this decision by launching strong accusations. The leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha accused Attorney General Arta Marku of being an instrument in the hands of PM Rama to destroy the evidence in Tahiri’s case. “They will arrest him to keep up appearances and then they will acquit him by destroying evidence”, he publicly accused. Meanwhile, the leader of the Socialist Movement for Integration, Monika Kryemadhi, considered Hajdarmataj’s removal unlawful and added that Rama will not be able to escape justice through these methods.

The US ambassador to Tirana, Donald Lu, said when, he was asked by journalists on this issue, that these high profile cases should move forward without political interferences.
