Today, Albania is a country with abundant water sources. But, authorities need to be careful, because this situation may change in the coming years and in ten years time, there may be water shortages. This is the alarm issued by government experts in the National Strategy for the 2018-2027 Integrated Management of Water Resources. This document provides details as to how climate changes and population growth, will face Albania with serious water shortages in a few years time. “1/3 of water sources belong to neighboring countries and it’s uncertain if these sources will be available in the years to come”, government experts explain regarding this fact.
“But let us not forget the fact that in 410 out of 626 dams that the country has, there are considerable technical damages. If they are not repaired, they could cause problems in water supply and irrigation”, is another warning issued by experts, pointing out another important element which relates to the big floods taken place in the recent years. Experts predict a growing number of floods due to the poor maintenance of the territory. “As far as climate changes are concerned, in ten years time, water levels in rivers Drin, Mat and Vjosa will be 20% lower”, the government’s document further says, warning for a shortage of water and calling for a more efficient use of it.
