Tsipras and Zaev agree to name Macedonia “North Macedonia”
“Republic of North Macedonia” is expected to be the new official name of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. This puts an end to a long naming dispute with the neighboring country, thanks to an agreement which is expected to be signed in Prespa by the end of the week by the Macedonian PM, Zoran Zaev and the Greek PM, Alexis Tsipras.

To become official, the new country’s name is expected to undergo constitutional amendments in Macedonia, but also in Greece. Once Zaev and Tsipras sign it, the agreement must be ratified by the Macedonian parliament. If it’s finalized this week, Zaev’s government will send a letter to over 190 states which have recognized the country as “Republic of Macedonia” to inform them that the name “North Macedonia” will now be used in bilateral and international relations. Also, a referendum is expected to take place at the end of September or October in Macedonia, where citizens will decide whether they accept or not the country’s new name “Republic of North Macedonia”. Immediately after this, Greece will lift its veto and will agree to Macedonia’s receiving an invitation to become a NATO member country and for a date to be decided in order for the country to launch accession talks with the European Union. On the other hand, the agreement in question also includes the following points: -The reference “Macedonian minorities to be protected” is removed from the Constitution of Greece. Meanwhile, the homogeneity part should be harmonized with the Greek Constitution. -The transition period should be determined through the amendment of internal documents of the neighboring countries and this process will be linked to the opening of preliminary negotiations with North Macedonia. -A Commission will be set up for the use of commercial terms in both countries. -Macedonian language has been accepted, with the remark that North Macedonia agrees that this language has a Slav origin (as it’s been underlined in the UN’s framework). -In the part relating to the nationality, the term Macedonian/citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia/will be accompanied by an explanatory note stating that the population of this country is not related to the Greek culture.
